Protests and counter-protests, this weekend had them all! The news giant C-SPAN was there to cover the anti-war protest that took place in front of the Pentagon Saturday.
What some speakers at the protest called a sea of thousands of faces, the broadcast revealed that there were about 500 souls that braved the cold to fight the imperial overlords who spread death and poverty wherever they go.
Perhaps those speakers should have edited their speeches before they decided to make claims about the number of people who showed up. News reports seemed to state that over a thousand people combined were there, taking into account the group of counter-protesters who stood out of camera shot. There was a barricade of police ready for battle in their riot gear.
The person pictured is a U.S. Marine who has served in Iraq. He was yelling at the anti-war protesters who were there supporting A.N.S.W.E.R., a commu-socialist organization who is trying to stop war, all war, no matter the cost.
I watched most of the rally and got a few good chuckles out of some of the claims. I laughed at their support of Hugo Chavez, calling him a great humanitarian and non-violent. (He achieved power through a failed, bloody coup in in 1992 and was then elected president in 1998) I chuckled when they claimed that terrorists were actually “freedom fighters.” Well:
“If fire fighters fight fire and crime fighters fight crime, what do freedom fighters fight?” – George Carlin.
The group cheered when it was announced that the protest was being broadcast nationwide on C-SPAN. Surprisingly, they cheered louder when it was announced that they were also being broadcast live on Al Jazeera.
All in all, it was good entertainment. I couldn’t wait to hear the crazy things that they would say next! It’s funny though how the counter-protesters got no TV time… so much for a liberal media bias!
